ANC desperation undermining democracy

The defection of Bev Abrahams, until recently a Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament in Gauteng and Political Head of the Phuthaditjhaba Constituency, to the ANC, demonstrates total desperation on the part of the ruling party to hold onto power in Gauteng. This defection together with that of other DA public representatives in the province seeks to undermine the very democracy that great leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Steve Bhiko, Helen Suzman and others had sacrificed their lives for. The ANC list released on Tuesday 11 March 2014 clearly shows its gross disregard for a corruption free society.

According to Dr Kevin Wax, the DA campaign manager for the Phuthaditjhaba Constituency and PR Councillor in the City of Johannesburg, who worked very closely with Bev Abrahams: “If Bev Abrahams is comfortable on the ANC list amongst other questionable politicians such as Jacob Zuma, Humphrey Memezi, Bheki Cele, Dina Pule and others and feels comfortable to be ‘back home’, then it displays a remarkable lack of political credibility and integrity. The ANC is not gaining credible leaders in these defections, but instead are buying over politicians who stand ready, at a moment’s notice, to trade their political values for personal gain thereby betraying the very communities whom they have vowed to fight for”.

Wax concludes: “Voters will not be fooled by such double standards and will harshly judge these misguided politicians and their new political masters on May the 7th”.
